And more recently, hip-hop artis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ts like\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gangsta<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Boo and La Chat proved that women could be just as brash, violent, and sexually explicit a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s their male counterparts.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Today, this tradition\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is alive and well in Memphis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">countless<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">female artists continue to push<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">boundaries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of music\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in new and exciting directions while keeping one foot deeply planted in tradition. The group, which also includes violinist Ethan Baker,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">formed only months before the Covid-19 pandemic, which has been both a gift and a curse. While the duo\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hasn\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0had the opportunity\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">establish<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0themselves as a live act<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0just yet<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they\u2019ve<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0found plenty of time to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sharpen and refine<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0their twangy and organic sound.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although the type of Americana music that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Oakwalker<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0specializes in may be more synonymous with Nashville than Memphis, the fact of the matter is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that country and folk music has a long and deep history in Memphis a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is seeing a strong\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">resurgence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Artists such as Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B owe a debt of gratitude to the Memphis pioneers who helped to break through rap\u2019s glass ceiling. Today, no Memphis rapper is carrying that torch more forcefully than Terrica Alexander, the fast-rising star better known as Jucee Froot. While the rapper has been a mainstay of the underground hip-hop scene for several years now, 2020 proved to be a major breakthrough for Jucee Froot, who released her major label debut \u201cBlack Sheep\u201d and contributed several songs to TV and film soundtracks such as Insecure, P-Valley, and Birds of Prey. In a recent article with Uproxx, Jucee Froot revealed that she has recently been in contact with her idol, Gangsta Boo, which has many fans excited for the potential of a collaboration in the future. While her twangy soprano voice is her signature, June is also a talented multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, banjo, and ukulele. After establishing herself as a cornerstone of the region with a series of homemade records and relentless touring, June began to catch the attention of music industry heavyweights such as Old Crow Medicine Show and The Black Keys\u2019 Dan Auerbach, who helped to bring the artist to the next level. Today, June is a bona fide star within the world of Americana music and has amassed a fanbase that spans the globe. Although we still haven\u2019t received her upcoming debut album, Safiya has earned legions of fans through her captivating live performances and a string of singles that blur the line between the spiritual and sensual. Safiya describes her art as \u201cdiasporic,\u201d a fitting description for music that pulls from virtually every genre and era of African American music from soul to hip-hop to jazz. This convergence of influences gives Safiya\u2019s music a sense of being both fresh and timeless, a consistent theme amongst Memphis\u2019 contemporary artists. \u201cI feel like we have to deal with being a \u2018legacy city,\u2019 but we\u2019re singing new soul classics, continuing the story of music through our music&#8230; I\u2019m really grateful to be a part of that,\u201d she says.
