Although<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Kelvin\u00a0<\/span>Kolheim<\/span>, the founder of Beale Street Brewing Co.,\u00a0<\/span>takes<\/span>\u00a0an undeniable sense of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>pride\u00a0<\/span>from\u00a0<\/span>own<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0the city\u2019s first\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>and only<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0Black-owned brewery<\/span>, he\u2019s clear that he wants\u00a0<\/span>his business\u00a0<\/span>to reflect the city of Memphis<\/a> as a whole.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWhen we first launched, a friend told me \u2018man, you\u2019re going to be able to help every brewery in town by introducing a whole different\u00a0<\/span>demographic to craft beer,\u2019 to which I\u00a0<\/span>said,<\/span>\u00a0\u2018well that\u2019s great, a rising tide lifts all boats<\/span>\u2019<\/span>,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span>He points out that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>o<\/span>ne of\u00a0<\/span>Beale Street Brewing\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>taglines is\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>B<\/span>EERrrbody<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a phrase that\u00a0<\/span>illustrates<\/span>\u00a0the business\u2019s commitment\u00a0<\/span>to celebrat<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0community through the love of craft beer.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cFrom the beginning, I knew that I<\/span>\u00a0wanted to make a beer that was for all Memphians,\u201d he says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even b<\/span>efore he became a brewery owner,\u00a0<\/span>Kolheim<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>had a long history of celebrating Memphis<\/a> and investing in the city\u2019s economic growth<\/span>, notably\u00a0<\/span>serv<\/span>ing\u00a0<\/span>as the Director of Economic Development with the\u00a0<\/span>Greater\u00a0<\/span>Memphis Chamber<\/span>\u00a0for eleven years.\u00a0<\/span>That all changed when he was given a home brewing kit from a friend, which he says immediate<\/span>ly reminded him\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>another\u00a0<\/span>one of his\u00a0<\/span>personal passion<\/span>s<\/span>, cooking<\/span>. \u201cComing from a culinary per<\/span>spective, I realized that I could manipulate flavors and come up with new combinations with the beer, just like I\u2019d always done with food.\u00a0<\/span>I just got bit by the brewing bug,\u201d he says with a chuckle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kolheim<\/span>\u00a0decided to turn his hobby into a business after<\/span>\u00a0participating in the Pink Palace\u2019s Science of Beer competition<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cAt that time,<\/span>\u00a0which was about\u00a0<\/span>six<\/span>\u00a0years ago,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Memphis was<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>definitely<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>underserved<\/span>\u00a0when it came to craft breweries,\u00a0<\/span>so I saw an opportunity<\/span>,\u201d he says<\/span>. The venture eventually became a<\/span>\u00a0true<\/span>\u00a0family a<\/span>ffair, with\u00a0<\/span>Kolheim<\/span>\u00a0employing several friends and family members to help bring his dream into fruition. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a\u00a0<\/span>strong, tight-knit team, which is important for any business,\u201d he tells me.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While creating delicious and innovative beer will always be at the heart of any successful brewery, Beale Street Brewing Co.<\/span>\u00a0has also earned a reputation for their beer\u2019s names and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>artwork, many of which pay homage to the city\u2019s musical heritage.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI\u2019m a huge Memphis music fan and knew that I wanted to celebrate that legacy, so that<\/span>\u00a0element has<\/span>\u00a0been there since the beginning<\/span>,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span>While\u00a0<\/span>Isaac Hayes, Al Green, and Three 6 Mafia are all referenced in Beale Street Brewing\u2019s beers,\u00a0<\/span>a special relationship has formed with hip-hop legends 8Ball & MJG, who collaborated with the brewery on the beer \u201cSpace Age\u00a0<\/span>Si<\/span>ppin<\/span>\u2019,\u201d a play on the group\u2019s song \u201cSpace Age\u00a0<\/span>Pimpin<\/span>\u2019.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u201cBasically, I just told them my story and pitched the idea to\u00a0<\/span>them,<\/span>\u00a0and they loved it…<\/span>I\u2019m just so glad that the beer lived up to the legends themselves and that they\u2019ve been so involved.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to forming relationships with local musical icons,\u00a0Kolheim\u00a0and Beale Street Brewing have also forged bonds with Memphis other craft breweries. \u201cThe Memphis brew scene is really great and supportive as a whole and I\u2019m really glad to be a part of it,\u201d he says. He points to his efforts last summer of bringing the Memphis brew scene together to produce a beer called \u201cBlack is Beautiful\u201d as a particularly memorable moment of unity. The project, which was\u00a0<\/span>started by Weathered Souls Brewing Company in San Antonio, aimed to bring attention to the injustices faced by people of color by donating the proceeds of the beer to organizations that help support police brutality reform. \u201cWe had an overwhelming response from the other breweries in town, and it marked the first time all of the city\u2019s breweries had collaborated on one project together,\u201d he says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike Memphis<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0other craft breweries, Beale Street Brewing does not currently have a taproom, although\u00a0<\/span>Kolheim<\/span>\u00a0says that\u00a0<\/span>finding a permanent home\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>now\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>top\u00a0<\/span>priority<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe\u2019ve been looking for a space for a few years now, but of course Covid put that a bit on the backburner. However, we\u2019re currently looking for a taproom Downtown, so keep your eyes peeled,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Until then, Memphians can find Beale Street Brewing\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>current<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>selection of\u00a0<\/span>beers basically anywhere that craft beers are sold<\/span>, as well as<\/span>\u00a0on tap at various restaurants and bars around town.\u00a0<\/span>The brewery is also\u00a0<\/span>currently\u00a0<\/span>working on several new beers, which should be released next month. \u201cWe\u2019re working on two new beers to celebrate our\u00a0<\/span>one-year<\/span>\u00a0anniversary<\/span>, which should be\u00a0<\/span>out in March<\/span>, and w<\/span>e\u2019re also working on a beer for the virtual Memphis Beer Fest, which is a\u00a0<\/span>collaboration<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with Bosco\u2019s called \u2018It\u2019s 901 Somewhere<\/span>\u2019,\u201d says\u00a0<\/span>Kolheim<\/span>. \u201c<\/span>One this is for certain: f<\/span>olks can expect a lot more of the same love and energy in our new releases.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
