Arnold<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no place like Memphis, Tennessee.\u00a0 To natives, it\u2019s not only a city, but it\u2019s a unique: state, culture, experience, and so much more!\u00a0 To our neighbors and other outsiders, here\u2019s the 1st edition of Memphispedia: The M from A to Z!<\/p>\n<h4>A<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Anfernee \u201cPenny\u201d Hardaway<\/dt>\n<dd>One of Memphis\u2019 favorite native sons, how could we not love Penny? From ballin at Trezevant, to then Memphis State, to the NBA, and now back home coaching our Memphis Tigers Men&#8217;s Basketball team! And let\u2019s not forget the catchy King Cotton commercials.<\/dd>\n<dt>Africa in April Cultural Awareness Festival<\/dt>\n<dd>For the past 34 years, Africans and African Americans have celebrated and honored the culture and heritage of our homeland. Hosted annually at Robert R. Church Park and Beale St., you\u2019ll see a plethora of cultural performances, food vendors, merchants, and more! Talk about a beautiful melanin overload!<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>B<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Beale Street<\/dt>\n<dd>I\u2019m sure we\u2019ve all seen some interesting things go down on Beale Street, whether you was out kicking it with friends or having a wild night before a wedding.\u00a0 Significant to the history of blues music, it\u2019s also a historic site for several civil rights events.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt>Barbeque (BBQ)<\/dt>\n<dd>Memphians could care less about the makeshift barbeque other cities claim to have.\u00a0 If it ain\u2019t Memphis barbeque, we don\u2019t want it! Why? Because who has better ribs, chopped shoulder, and brisket than US?! I mean why else would the International BBQ Fest be stationed here<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>C<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Crystal Palace<\/dt>\n<dd>#LongLiveCP !\u00a0 The real Memphis vets will always stay ten toes down for the premier skating rink that taught us unlimited life lessons and brought the best of adolescence memories.\u00a0 Still standing down on Third St, was once the place where you could hear the music blasting from the street, especially on the nights when there were performances made by our favorite rap stars.\u00a0 And let\u2019s not forget the infamous smell of Crystal Palace, if you know you know.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt>Circle B<\/dt>\n<dd>Memphis is the home of the famous Circle B Sausage Company.\u00a0 Most of our up north and west coast cousins and aunties always come down to visit with a cooler cause where else can you get the best damn smoked sausages, hot links, and more? Nowhere but in Memphis baby!\u00a0 Where else would one consider breakfast to be a slightly burnt smoked sausage with white rice and a biscuit on the side?<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>D<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Dixie Queen<\/dt>\n<dd>Whether it\u2019s two in the morning or two in the afternoon, you can always count on Dixie Queen to be open and ready to serve you breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a snack.\u00a0 Most Memphians can\u2019t tell you where a Waffle House is at, mainly because of #1 Dixie Queen is better, #2 we don\u2019t own many, &amp; #3: see reason #1. Now if you wait to go late at night, be patient with all the FedEx folks in line and be careful to not get the grease on ya clothes.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>E<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Easy Way<\/dt>\n<dd>Long live Easy Way, one our favorite Memphis grocery\/produce stores.\u00a0 Known for its bright orange buildings and name painted in bold black letters, it was hard to miss.\u00a0 This was the real deal Whole Foods and Wild Oats before those retailers even touched down in the city.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>F<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>\u201cFye\u201d<\/dt>\n<dd>Fye is simply a verb and adjective.\u00a0 In the use of a verb it\u2019s mainly quoted as, \u201cThey finna fye on his ass!\u201d or \u201c I\u2019ma fye yo ass up!\u201d.\u00a0 In the case of an adjective it is most used in relation to music or food. \u201cThis junt too fye!\u201d or \u201cDamn, this hoe fye! Who this?\u201d<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>G<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>G.E.Patterson<\/dt>\n<dd>Gilbert Earl Patterson was a minister that served as the second youngest international Presiding Bishop and Chief Apostle of the Church of God In Christ (COGIC).\u00a0 GE Patterson Avenue and Patterson Flats are named after him.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt>Graceland<\/dt>\n<dd>Memphis is home to several historic and famous mansions, with one of them being the internationally-known Graceland.\u00a0 Home to Elvis Presely, located in the middle of Whitehaven is a white mansion, planes, a graffiti covered brick wall, and more that you truly can\u2019t miss at all.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>H<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Hernando de Soto Bridge<\/dt>\n<dd>Technically we refer to this bridge as \u201cThe M Bridge\u201d due to it\u2019s shape and huge play in our skyline.\u00a0 However our elders call it \u201cThe New Bridge\u201d.\u00a0 Either way, it\u2019s a relief to see when traveling back from the west, and the new light display has amped up our admiration for it.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>I<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Interstate 240 (I-240)<\/dt>\n<dd>Anywhere you wanna go in Memphis, just hop on I-240 and within 20 minutes (without traffic delays) you\u2019ll be at your destination.\u00a0 Shoot even if you want to take a trip out the city, it\u2019ll connect you to I-55 (Chicago\/St. Louis) or even I-40 (Nashville\/Little Rock).<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>J<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Junt<\/dt>\n<dd>Junt is a noun.\u00a0 It is practically anything you can imagine.\u00a0 It\u2019s food, a house, a car, work, your crush, clothes, LITERALLY ANYTHING!\u00a0 In some cases, junt is also a synonym for another favorite Memphis term, hoe.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt>Jack Pirtle\u2019s<\/dt>\n<dd>You ain\u2019t had gravy till you\u2019ve had Jack Pirtile\u2019s gravy.\u00a0 Chileeee it\u2019s good enough to drank, but it\u2019s definitely recommended to sop practically anything in it.\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget an order of gizzards and chicken too.\u00a0 You can pass any location, especially the one on Bellevue and smell it all through the air and even through your car air filter.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>K<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>K97.1<\/dt>\n<dd>Growing up in Memphis, we\u2019ve all called K97 at least five times trying to win tickets to Summer Jam or Yo Gotti\u2019s Birthday Bash, and more.\u00a0 When it came time for prom we made sure to vote our school for the Platinum Prom, or we called in just to give a shoutout to our boo.\u00a0 DJ Devin Steel (THE Highschool\u2019s very own), Big Sue, &amp; more always kept us laughing and lit especially for the five\u2019o\u2019clock traffic jam!<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>L<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>LeMoyne-Owen College<\/dt>\n<dd>The only HBCU in Memphis, TN is LeMoyne-Owen College.\u00a0 Residing in South Memphis, many notable African Americans such as civil rights leader Benjamin Hooks obtained their degree here.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>M<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Mane<\/dt>\n<dd>We\u2019re not sure how many times we have to tell y\u2019all that WE NEVER PUT A \u201cY\u201d IN MANE!\u00a0 Mane is a pronoun that is used in several ways.\u00a0 It can be used in a greeting, a term of endearment, and much more. E.g. \u201cWassup mane! What it do mane? Aye mane say mane. Mane fresh as hell ain\u2019t it?\u201d<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt>Memphis City Schools<\/dt>\n<dd>Memphis vets ages 23+ remember good ole MCS.\u00a0 From the curriculum all the way down to the legendary sugar cookies, we\u2019ll never forget the institution that educated us and made us valuable products of public schools.\u00a0 This educational era will never be recreated, and it is quite an honor to own a high school diploma that reads \u201cMemphis City Schools\u201d in bold.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>N<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Nobody<\/dt>\n<dd>Mane look, in Memphilations 100:1, written by Playa Fly, he said \u201cNobody needs nobody\u201d and that\u2019s just that on that.\u00a0 This motivational scripture basically tells us that shit gets real out here, but at the end of the day you got it. Hold your head up mane!<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>O<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Orpheum Theatre<\/dt>\n<dd>Who needs Broadway when we have the Orpheum?\u00a0 This historic beauty is always providing us top notch theatrical entertainment unlike any other.\u00a0 We\u2019ve adored watching Cats the musical, India Arie, The Lion King, and more!<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>P<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Pyramid<\/dt>\n<dd>Talk about a major flex.\u00a0 Outside of Memphis, Egypt, who do you know has a giant pyramid in their front yard? I\u2019ll wait. On top of that, it\u2019s silver and reflects in the sun.\u00a0 Then, it can be transformed into practically anything, from NBA games to graduations, to a museum, and shoot you see we turned it into a world within its own with flipping it to a Bass Pro.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt>Paper Chase<\/dt>\n<dd>\u201cUH I\u2019M STILL DOING THISSSS!\u201d\u00a0 Please move out the way if you ever hear this song come on, cause you will get Paper Chased out the way.\u00a0 Made by EP, this song is a must on your playlist especially if you trynna turn up an athletic game.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>Q<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Queen Steamboat<\/dt>\n<dd>Iconic to the South, but definitely to Memphis is the Queen Steamboats.\u00a0 Sitting in between Mud Island and the City, you can take a trip up and down the Mississippi.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>R<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Robert R. Church<\/dt>\n<dd>Robert Reed Church Sr. was THE first African American millionaire in the South.\u00a0 A prominent entrepreneur, businessman, and landowner that rose during the American Civil War, made a lasting impression on the city that\u2019s still noticeable till this day.\u00a0 He funded for African Americans in Memphis to be able to enjoy the same luxuries as White Memphians, by developing a public park, concert hall, and more.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt>Ruby Wilson<\/dt>\n<dd>\u201cMiss Ruby sings the blues so you don\u2019t have to!\u201d<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>S<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Southern Heritage Classic<\/dt>\n<dd>Memphis\u2019 premier fall weekend is the one and only Southern Heritage Classic!\u00a0 Shoutout to Fred Jones for this gem, as it\u2019s a true Memphian tradition.\u00a0 Having Tennessee State University and Jackson State University play at the Liberty Bowl, along with the long list of events during the weekend has provided several ways to engage with and encourage the youth of Memphis to attend historically black colleges and universities.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt>Statue of Liberation Through Christ<\/dt>\n<dd>One of the many ways that you know you\u2019re in Hickory Hill (East Memphis) is when you see the Statue of Liberty at the intersection of Winchester and Kirby.\u00a0 Yea I know you probably thought it was only in New York, but that\u2019s obviously just a replica that they have up north LOL!<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>T<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Three 6 Mafia<\/dt>\n<dd>The name really speaks for itself.\u00a0 Standing the test of time is Memphis\u2019 forever favorite rap group, Three 6 Mafia.\u00a0 DJ Paul, Juicy J, Gangsta Boo, Crunchy Black, Lord Infamous, and Koopsta Knicca. Also, of course we HAVE to mention Prophet Posse\/Hypnotize Camp Posse (La Chat, Project Pat, Frayser Boy, Kingpin Skinny Pimp, and more).<\/dd>\n<dt>That\u2019s What\u2019s Up<\/dt>\n<dd>THE ULTIMATE MEMPHIS ANTHEM!\u00a0 Made by Yo Gotti, this anthem is bound to be in every Memphian\u2019s playlist, even your pastor\u2019s that wasn\u2019t always saved and sanctified.\u00a0 Warning, this song will cause Memphians to go crazy and sway their hands around with their pointed index finger due to the authentic lyrics.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>U<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>\u201cUglass\u201d<\/dt>\n<dd>In most cases this term is used as \u201c Getcho\u2019 Uglass\u2026\u201d followed by a mouthful of adjectives as to why you\u2019re ugly.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>V<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Voodoo Village<\/dt>\n<dd>Also known as St. Peter\u2019s Spiritual Temple, this compound was started by Wash \u201cDoc\u201d Harris.\u00a0 Due to it sitting on a dead end street, and all of the masonic art, many Memphians coined the compound as Voodoo Village.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>W<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>WDIA &amp; WLOK<\/dt>\n<dd>WDIA was the first radio station in America that was programmed entirely for African Americans.\u00a0 We all remember riding to school listening to Bobby O\u2019Jay on WDIA or Tom Joyner Morning Show on WLOK.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dt>\u201cWassup Mane\u201d<\/dt>\n<dd>Now if you hear this phrase directed at you, there\u2019s a few things to keep in mind.\u00a0 Either you\u2019re about to be verbally or physically embarrassed like never before or folks just playing with you.\u00a0 Now if you can hold your own, then do what you need to do, but if you can\u2019t then just gone mentally prepare yourself to take a big L in checkin and fighting.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>X<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>XFL Memphis Mania<\/dt>\n<dd>The XFL\u2019s Memphis Mania was a professional football team that was also known as The Ax.\u00a0 At slightly over 20,000 fans per game, they played at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in the western division.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h4>Y<\/h4>\n<dl>\n<dt>Young Dolph (1985 &#8211; 2021)<\/dt>\n<dd>Taken from us much too soon, Castalia\u2019s very own brought us Memphis classics such as <i>Preach, Get Paid<\/i>, as well as the <i>Rich Slave,<\/i>\u00a0<i>King of Memphis, <\/i>and<i> Paper Route<\/i> albums.
