Ninety years after the Works Progress Administration poured its concrete in 1936, the Overton Park Shell remains one of the only active Depression-era bandshells in the country. This fall, Memphis’ backyard music venue celebrates that milestone the only way it knows how: by throwing open the lawn for free.

From September 4 through October 11, the Shell hosts six consecutive weekends of sound, color, and community across the Orion Financial Free Concert Series and the Shell Yeah! Benefit Series presented by Mempho Presents.

A Lineup That Sounds Like Memphis

The fall slate runs the full range of the city’s musical DNA. Austin guitar phenom Jackie Venson, a Marvin Gaye tribute featuring Larry Springfield, the Memphis Country Blues Festival, Hattiloo Theatre’s 20th anniversary celebration, Gonerfest 23, a Hispanic Heritage Celebration, Opera Memphis marking 70 years, and Shakespeare at the Shell closing things out with Love’s Labor’s Lost. Nearly all of it is free.

The Birthday Weekend

September 10 through 13 is the main event. Stax legend Booker T opens the 90th-anniversary weekend with a special ticketed performance, followed by three free days: a birthday picnic with the Memphis Youth Symphony; Sounds of the Shell; The Gathering; and the Memphis Studio Superset, a mashup celebrating the studios that built this city’s sound.

The Shell has been the stomping ground for rising artists since before Elvis played it in 1954. Ninety years in, the tradition is not slowing down.

The first museum exhibition of David Uzochukwu’s career is not opening in Berlin, London, or New York. It is opening in Memphis, and that matters.

David Uzochukwu: Bodies of Water runs June 10 through September 27, 2026, at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, marking the debut solo museum show for the Austrian-Nigerian photographer and filmmaker. At just 27, Uzochukwu has already been published in the British Journal of Photography, i-D, and Dazed, exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in London and Fotografiska in New York and Shanghai, directed episodes of Black Fruit that premiered at Tribeca, and landed on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Now the Bluff City gets him first.

Hybrid Beings, Dreamlike Waters

Bodies of Water gathers 22 photographs of figures who are part human, part animal. Adorned with fins, scales, and other features, they move through surreal landscapes built to test them, and they are equipped to survive. The images draw on mythology, fantasy, and histories of migration to evoke the adaptability and resilience of diasporic communities navigating environments often marked by hostility and exclusion. Within these imagined worlds, Blackness resists simple definition. It is fluid, shifting, and vibrantly alive.

A Memphis Connection Behind the Lens

The exhibition is curated by Efe Igor Coleman, an independent curator and Yale-trained historian who previously served as the Blackmon Perry Assistant Curator of African American Art and Art of the African Diaspora at the Brooks. Her return to the museum for this show puts Memphis at the center of a global conversation about identity and belonging.

In Memphis, music is more than sound—it’s a story rooted in place, people, and experience.

Memphis Rap Tours brings that story to life through a guided bus experience that takes you through the neighborhoods, streets, and landmarks that shaped the city’s global influence on hip-hop. It’s not a traditional tour—it’s a moving mixtape, where every stop connects the music to a moment in Memphis history.

Where Music Meets Place

Along the way, riders hear the stories behind Memphis’s most influential artists, producers, and cultural movements—all while traveling through the very communities that shaped them. From iconic locations to lesser-known corners of the city, the tour offers a deeper understanding of how Memphis helped define the sound of Southern hip-hop.

With curated music, live narration, and photo stops built into the experience, it’s an immersive way to see—and hear—the city from a new perspective.

Rooted in Memphis Culture

Launched as the city’s first rap-focused tour, Memphis Rap Tours was created to celebrate both the entertainment and cultural impact of Memphis hip-hop.

Because here, the music reflects something bigger.

It tells the story of a city known for its grit, creativity, and influence—one that helped shape hip-hop as we know it today.

Come Ride

Whether you’re a lifelong Memphian or visiting for the first time, Memphis Rap Tours offers a new way to experience the city—through the music, the stories, and the places that made it all happen.

Because in Memphis, the soul doesn’t just live in the music.
It lives in the streets that created it.

In a city known for shaping the sound of the world, music isn’t just something you hear in Memphis, it’s something you feel, something you live.

At The Studio Karaoke, that feeling is turned into an experience.

Founded by Memphis native Deidre Ellis, The Studio Karaoke was created with one goal in mind: to bring more joy to the city. After leaving Memphis and returning home with a fresh perspective, Ellis saw an opportunity to create something new in the local entertainment scene. Something that felt both globally inspired and deeply rooted in Memphis culture.

The result is a “karaoke box” concept—popular across many Asian countries and growing in cities across the U.S.—that offers private, bookable suites where guests can sing, celebrate, and connect in a space of their own.

But this isn’t just karaoke.

A New Way to Experience Memphis Music

Inside The Studio Karaoke, each room tells a story.

Guests can step into Memphis-inspired suites designed to reflect the city’s rich musical legacy, from the energy of performing on Beale Street to the intimacy of a recording studio session. Every detail invites visitors to not just listen to Memphis music, but to become a part of it.

Whether you’re channeling your inner performer in the arena-style room or vibing out with friends in a studio-inspired space, the experience is immersive, personal, and uniquely Memphis.

Designed for Joy, Connection, and Community

At its core, The Studio Karaoke is about creating space.

Space to celebrate.
Space to be yourself.
Space to experience joy without pressure.

By offering private suites, guests can enjoy karaoke with friends, family, or coworkers—no stage fright required. You control the playlist straight from your phone, order food and drinks directly to your room, and create your own vibe from start to finish.

It’s a different kind of night out—one that centers connection and comfort just as much as entertainment.

Rooted in Memphis, Built for the Moment

As a Black woman-owned business, The Studio Karaoke represents the kind of innovation and cultural influence that continues to shape Memphis today. It’s a reflection of the city’s ability to honor its past while embracing new ideas and experiences.

For Ellis, it all comes back to pride in the place she calls home.

Memphis has always been a city worth celebrating, and spaces like this make that even more clear.

Because here, you don’t just listen to the legacy.
You step into it.

Soul lives here.

Since its founding in 2010, London’s influential Boiler Room series has organized more than 8,000 performances in upwards of 200 cities across the world, garnering millions of views along the way. Although the series’ premise is fairly simple–one camera, one DJ, one room—it has quickly grown into one of the most influential platforms in contemporary music culture. What sets it apart isn’t just the artists it showcases, but the intimacy of the format: performers surrounded by dancers, friends, and strangers, with the line between audience and artist deliberately blurred.

For the past 16 years, Boiler Room has usually focused on the here and now, documenting emerging artists, new scenes, and sounds that feel like they’re still taking shape in real time. That’s what makes this week’s programming feel like a deliberate shift in perspective. Instead of focusing on the future, Boiler Room is turning its cameras toward the past, specifically to the foundational figures of Memphis rap who first began recording in the 1990s.

In October, the London crew descended on Memphis to record a string of Boiler Room concerts that are truly unlike any others in the series. Recorded at the legendary Royal Studios–once the home to Memphis soul icons such as Al Green, Willie Mitchell, and Ann Peebles–the Memphis rap-focused showcase featured crunked-out performances from underground legends Tommy Wright III, DJ Spanish Fly, Shawty Pimp, Al Kapone, La Chat, and DJ Zirk.

Nearly three months later, these performances will finally be available to the public as they’re set to premiere on Thursday, January 22nd on Boiler Room’s channel. For those of you in Memphis, you can join the official watch party at No Comment Wine Bar at 8PM, which promises to feature appearances by many of the legendary rappers themselves.

For longtime fans and newcomers alike, this Memphis-focused Boiler Room set is a rare opportunity to witness the roots of a genre that continues to shape hip-hop today, framed through the uniquely intimate lens that only Boiler Room can provide.

By the time their breakneck tour of Europe was finally over, a sense of both exhaustion and accomplishment were felt by Tommy Wright III, La Chat, and DJ Spanish Fly. The Memphis rap legends had just wound through a series of clubs in Paris, London, Berlin, Manchester, Barcelona, and beyond, all of which were filled with rapturous audiences who may not have understood the English language, but were fluent in M-Town rap.

As one fan at the Paris show later wrote “It was a legendary moment. I came back home covered in sweat and with a crazy smile on my face.”

The trio had touched down in each city not just as touring acts, but as cultural ambassadors who helped transform crunk and horrorcore from a regional sound into a global phenomenon.

The tour first came about as a way to help promote the La Chat-focused documentary The Other Queen of Memphis, a short film directed by Belgian artist Luna Mahoux. “Once the documentary was done, Luna helped me put together a tour so that we could so some shows along with the screenings,” explains La Chat. “We decided to make it a whole Memphis-based showcase, which is where Tommy and Spanish Fly came in.”

The tour kicked off at the historical Bourse de Commerce in Paris, a gorgeous exhibition space built in 1763. “It was high, high energy, man” recalls Spanish Fly. “It was off the chain. Performing in this historical museum in Paris is something that nobody there will ever forget.” Chat shared these sentiments, saying “Paris was great and a perfect way to boost everything off. It gave me that motivation. These folks were really live!”

The fact that a group of self-taught rap artists from the streets of Memphis found themselves being celebrated in front of haute Parisian society may seem a bit crazy (including to the artists themselves), but it was yet another example of the Bluff City’s global impact. Although Tommy Wright III and Spanish Fly had previously toured in Europe, this was La Chat’s first time on the other side of the pond. “It was crazy, because outside of the London show, I of course couldn’t understand the different languages, but they would be singing all of my lyrics during the shows,” she says. “I have to shout out the Barcelona show especially…that crowd was amazing.”

Now, the trio–along with the notable addition of Crunchy Black, Gangsta Pat, and DJ Zirk–will be bringing their globe-spanning show back for a homecoming show on Halloween night. On Friday, October 31st, Shangri-La Records is bringing the Memphis Rap Ogz showcase to Minglewood Hall for an epic hip-hop family reunion.

“As far as what I’m expecting for Halloween night? I’m expecting Memphis, mane. I know my people are gonna show out and show love. It’ll be a night to remember,” says Chat. As for DJ Spanish Fly, he promises “a legendary night…Forreal, we’re planning to show up and to show out.”

From large-scale festivals and star-studded arena shows to intimate album release shows, these are ten of the upcoming live music events that you don’t want to miss this fall…

Memphis Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Dates & Venue: Thursday, September 25th at the Cannon Center

Hailed as “Memphis Music’s Biggest Night of the Year,” the Memphis Music Hall of Fame is inducting its newest class (Art Gilliam, Cordell Jackson, Robert Johnson, Denise LaSalle, Wendy Moten, and Johnnie Taylor) with the help of some famous friends. John Mellencamp, Martina McBride, and Eric Gales are among the evening’s special guest, but expect many more surprises as well.

Gonerfest 22

Dates & Venue: September 25-28 at Wiseacre Brewing (Broad Avenue), with Sunday’s free grand finale at Overton Park Shell.

Once a series of unhinged live shows held at several Midtown watering holes, Gonerfest has since matured into a true Memphis institution, gaining a dedicated global following along the way. For their 22nd iteration, Goner has relocated to Wiseacre Brewing and the Overton Park Shell, providing plenty of room for the throngs of people who will surely descend on our fair city to catch an excellent and musically-diverse line-up include Lightning Bolt, Radioactivity, W.I.T.C.H., Tommy Wright III, Snooper, and more. If you’re into gritty, loud, off-beat, and experimental sounds, this is your weekend.

Mempho Music Festival

Dates & Venue: October 3-5, 2025 at Radians Amphitheater at Memphis Botanic Garden

Without disclosing my age, let’s just say that I’m no longer drawn to the discomfort and chaos of large outdoor festivals such as Bonnaroo and Coachella, which is one reason why Mempho Music Fest has become a perennial favorite. Stacked line-ups in a shaded and lush location with plenty of room to lay out and chill? Sign me up. Headliners for this year’s fest include Mempho favorites Widespread Panic, Tyler Childers, Father John Misty, The Flaming Lips, Sierra Ferrell, Lucero, Mavis Staples, and more. You looking for some laid-back outdoor autumn vibes? Well look no further…

Memphist Fest

Date & Venue: October 3-4 at the Hi Tone

Although it shares a similar name to our previous entry, the 2-day Memphist Fest is in many ways the spiritual opposite of Mempho’s feet-in-the-grass vibes. Featuring a heavy-hitting collection of hardcore, punk, metal, and hip-hop, including local favorites such as Lukah and Little Baby Tendencies, this is the weekend choice for those who prefer PBR over patchouli.

Memphis Country Blues Festival Presents Christone “Kingfish” Ingram

Date & Venue: Friday, October 10th at the Overton Park Shell

As part of the ongoing Shell Yeah! Benefit Series–which hosted a great performance from Big K.R.I.T. earlier this month–the good folks at the Shell are bringing Clarksdale, Mississippi native Kingfish Ingram back to the Delta for what promises to be one of this season’s best shows. The modern torchbearer of Delta blues, Kingfish brings jaw-dropping guitar fireworks and a voice steeped in the tradition of the Mississippi Hill Country. An open-air Shell show in early fall is about as perfect as it gets for pure blues magic.

Tambourine Bash (Music Export Memphis)

Date & Venue: Thursday, October 16, 2025 at Overton Park Shell

Now in its fifth year, Tambourine Bash doubles as a community celebration and a fundraiser for Music Export Memphis, a true gem within the local music landscape. As those who have attended the event before can tell you, this night is all about surprise collaborations and all-star jams featuring some of the city’s best and brightest. Highlights of this year’s collaborations include Unapologetic + Future-Everything and Black Cream + Marcella Simien + The Lucky 7 Brass Band.

Chris Brown, Jhene Aiko & Bryson Tiller

Date & Venue: Saturday, October 18th at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium

I will choose to keep my personal feelings about Chris Brown quiet for now (shout out to Jhene Aiko & Bryson Tiller tho!) and instead celebrate the fact that live music is once again returning to the Liberty Bowl after a 28 year hiatus. We’re genuinely hoping that this star-studded event is the beginning of a new era for the venue and many similar acts continue to stream through in the years to come.

Joe Restivo’s A Beautiful Friendship Record Release Show

Date & Venue: Thursday, October 23rd at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts

Local jazz guitar great Joe Restivo will be celebrating the release of his latest album A Beautiful Friendship with a night of soulful, swinging originals and classics. The Green Room’s intimate acoustics will showcase every warm note of Restivo’s band, which is to include a murderers row of top-notch talent.

The Boy Is Mine Tour Ft. Brandy, Monica, Kelly Rowland & Muni Long

Date & Venue: Thursday, October 30, 2025 at FedExForum

‘90s R&B fans are eating good as some of the biggest stars of the decade hit the FedEx Forum for a night of nostalgic fun. Brandy and Monica share the stage for the first time in years, where they will hopefully finally decide on who the boy belongs to. They’ll be  joined by powerhouse vocalists Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child fame and newer star Muni Long. Expect throw back jams, duets, and plenty of vocal fireworks.

Shangri-La Records Presents Memphis Rap OGz

Date & Venue: Friday, October 31, 2025 at Minglewood Hall

Peanut butter and chocolate. Wine and cheese. Memphis horrorcore and Halloween night. Some things just pair perfectly, which is certainly how we’re feeling about the upcoming Memphis Rap OGz showcase. Featuring some of the most influential artists in Memphis rap history–La Chat, Tommy Wright III, Crunchy Black, DJ Spanish Fly, Gangsta Pat, and DJ Zirk–this is shaping up to be the event for the spookiest night of the year.

Enjoy some of the finest Memphis has to offer, like cajun pasta, shrimp and grits, bayou crab dip, and so much more. This hot spot is open every night from 5:00 to 10:00 PM for the perfect late-night eatery.

Lamplighter Lounge

This restaurant and bar over on Madison opens after 6:00 PM for drinks, food, and live entertainment. From karaoke to drag shows, you’re sure to have fun at this local dining spot. They even have a whole section of vegan specialties, like mac and cheese and a veggie dog. You can also share a charcuterie plate or loaded fries (with a plant-based option) while you watch musicians, comedians, and more.

Voodoo Cafe

What goes great with coffee? If you said beignets, then this is the place for you. Voodoo Cafe serves up unique coffee drinks and Southern-style treats, including classic, topped, and filled beignets with options for Nutella, Fruity Pebbles, and even a savory feta beignet. There’s no shortage of flavors here at this New Orleans-inspired coffee shop. Try the Purple Haze for a Saigon-style iced coffee that’ll transport your tastebuds.

Though “Walking in Memphis” wasn’t quite written with our nature trails in mind, we fully believe it should’ve been. Sitting on the Mississippi means the Bluff City has plentiful greenery and natural beauty, making it a perfect place to connect with the great outdoors. We even have a few parks and trails so you can get up, get moving, and get closer to the beautiful scenery. Here are some of our favorite places you can go hiking in Memphis, TN.

Wolf River Greenway

The Wolf River Conservancy has over 20,000 acres and many hiking trails, like the Greenway and Refuge Trailhead. The Greenway offers 14 miles of a paved pathway, with up to 26 miles being planned for the future. This takes you across the city of Memphis near notable landmarks like Mud Island, the Wolf Crossing suspension bridge, and more.

Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

This Tennessee state park has 20 miles of trails with views of Poplar Tree Lake, bottomlands, and even endangered plants. There’s a mix of paved and natural surfaces, with four moderate trails and one 8.5-mile easy trail you can use for hiking or horseriding. The paved bicycle trail is great for bringing along strollers, wheelchairs, or bikes with views of the surrounding forest.

Shelby Farms Greenline

One unique aspect of the Shelby Farms Greenline is how this previous railroad track runs throughout Memphis. This 10-mile urban trail takes you from Midtown to Cordova, and it’s run entirely on community support. Plus, if you don’t want to hike the full journey, you can rent a bike at the Hyde Lake Wheel House, but you can always make this trail more fun with friends or your pets.

T.O. Fuller State Park

This historic park was the first state park open for African Americans east of the Mississippi River in honor of Dr. Thomas O. Fuller. There are 4 hiking trails and a loop, with a mix of natural and hard surfaces, both easy and moderate for any level of hikers. The 4-mile Discovery Trail goes through the Chucalissa Indian Village and the wetlands for one-of-a-kind scenery in the heart of the 901.

Overton Park

Right outside of the Memphis Zoo, you can find one of the city’s treasures at Overton Park. Trails like the Old Forest Trail include paved and unpaved walking paths through the old-growth forest with trail markers to keep you on track. Bring your pup to the nearby Overton Bark dog park for an off-leash experience. You can also check out their community walks and events to meet new friends while getting your daily steps in.

Riverwoods State Natural Area

This reserve in Germantown is located along the Wolf River and has 21 acres of plants and wildlife, perfect for immersing yourself in local flora and fauna. The trail is great for enjoying a shorter journey with a friend or pet. And it’s a must-see during any season, thanks to the beautiful foliage and peaceful area.

Agricenter International RV Park

This centrally-located RV park is right by our famous Agricenter, where Memphis hosts farmer’s markets, conventions, trade shows, and fairs during the year. And depending on the season, you can get a great view of the corn maze or sunflower fields with your RV campsite. Enjoy modern conveniences such as sewer hookups, electrical connections, water facilities, on-site laundry, and even the local Shelby Farms Park to bring your family or pet.

Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

Located in Millington, the Meeman-Shelby Forest campground offers unbeatable views from the Chickasaw Bluffs of plant life, water features, and over 12,000 acres of lush greenery. For nearly a decade, IMAKEMADBEATS and the Unapologetic collective that he founded have been at the cutting-edge of music, reimagining what it means to be part of the Memphis music scene. However, as he has helped lead his company to newfound heights of public recognition, including high-profile collaborations with the Memphis Grizzlies and the PGA, MAD has often had to put his own music on the back-burner.

That all changes this Saturday, November 16th, when MAD will return to the stage for the first time since 2019 for an album release showcase that he’s calling “Masters of the Universe” at the Pink Palace Planetarium. Last month, we caught up with IMAKEMADBEATS at his Midtown studio Outerspace to learn more about the album and his upcoming live performance.

To set the stage a bit, MAD–née James Dukes–has been quietly managing a rare auto-immune disorder, which has often times made keeping up with his grueling schedule a near impossibility. This struggle, he says, was a primary inspiration for his new album.

“I was watching War of the Worlds recently, and I noted the fact that the humans could not defeat the aliens…the aliens were ultimately defeated by bacteria. Essentially, the strength of the aliens was undermined by one of the smallest things on earth. I started to feel like ‘Well, maybe I have this issue. Maybe my body wasn’t made to deal with earth’s atmosphere. Maybe I’m not from here…”

This idea birthed the concept for WANDS, his new (largely instrumental) concept album that begins with MAD leaving earth in search of his home, wherever in the cosmos that may be. “Everyone who knows me well knows that for the last 10 years or so I’ve been saying ‘One day I’m just gonna disappear.’ This album is the story of what happens when I finally disappear.”

Conceived as a movie score, WANDS is a soundtrack “for those daring to leave the familiar  behind, seeking solace and understanding in the vast expanse of the universe.” As such, there likely isn’t a more fitting place in the city to unveil it than at the Pink Palace, an organization that Unapologetic has already collaborated with for their ongoing Midnight Marauder series.

When I tell him that I find the budding relationship between Unapologetic and the Pink Palace as being beautifully serendipitous–-especially when considering Saturday night’s celestially-themed event–MAD is quick to correct me.

“To quote V in V for Vendetta, ‘I don’t believe in coincidences, only the illusion of it.’ My life has been filled with instances that make you say ‘How the fuck did this happen at exactly the right time?’ I just lean into it at this point,” he explains. “As a matter of fact, when I first met [Pink Palace Executive Director] Kevin Thompson, he was like ‘Yeah man, I’m not sure if you’re into things like the planetarium’ and I had to stop him and say ‘Bro, you know my studio is called Outerspace right?!’”

This all brings up back to Saturday night’s “Masters of the  Universe” celebration, which will be held on MAD’s birthday. No coincidences, right? In addition to playing his new album, MAD will also be controlling the stars in the sky and unveiling new visuals, guiding the audience  through a mysterious interstellar journey.

“This is not just a performance,” reads the press release. “It is an odyssey where vulnerability becomes art, and  music becomes a portal to the magical realms beyond our world.” Honestly, we wouldn’t expect anything less.

Tickets for “Masters of the Universe” can be purchased here. The event begins at 7PM.

9. Cooper-Young+ Overton Square

Cooper-Young and Overton Square are two spots making up Midtown Memphis’ shopping areas! Cooper-Young describes themselves best: it’s where “history, art, culture, and cuisine all merge to create a lifestyle district all its own!” The neighborhood offers a variety of unique boutiques, antique stores, and specialty shops, making it a great spot for discovering unique treasures. Overton Square is not just a shopping destination but also a cultural hotspot. With a mix of retail stores, entertainment venues, and dining options, it’s a lively place to spend an afternoon or evening.

Memphis’s shopping scene is as vibrant and diverse as the city itself, offering a blend of modern malls, unique boutiques, and charming outdoor centers. Exploring these shopping hotspots not only allows you to discover great products but also to experience the rich culture and community spirit of Memphis.

So, whether you’re a local or a visitor, make sure to carve out some time to explore these fantastic shopping destinations and immerse yourself in the diverse retail offerings of Memphis and its surrounding areas.

Ready or not, the holiday season is now upon us, which means the inescapable sounds of Bing Crosby and Mariah Carey have likely already invaded your headspace, whether you consented or not. That said, not all holiday music is created equally, and there are several awesome options headed our way soon. Here’s a quick guide to the best live music offerings heading to the M Town in the coming weeks that promise to leave you feeling downright festive…

Lucero Family Christmas (Dec. 6 at Minglewood Hall)

The Lucero Family Christmas returns to Minglewood Hall this year, as the hometown alt-country heroes pair up with special guests including Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace (!!!) and hard rocking duo Heels. As many people have learned over the years, Lucero events at Minglewood Hall have a special alchemy that makes them all must-see events.

A BLVD Christmas featuring Anthony Hamilton (Dec. 8 at Mississippi Blvd. Church)

Grammy award winning R&B artist Anthony Hamilton will be joining the BLVD Sanctuary Choir & Orchestra for an evening of soulful holiday vibes at the historic Mississippi Blvd. Church on the edge of Crosstown. I have to admit, it was a bit startling to see Hamilton pop up on a flyer for a local church’s Christmas concert, but I’ll chalk it up to a bit of holiday magic.

Shangri-La Records Holiday Road Show (Dec. 9 at Shangri-La Records)

I can’t think of a better way to get my holiday shopping done than with a killer afternoon of live music soundtracking the experience. On Saturday, Shangri-La will be hosting a holiday sale alongside live performances from Susan Marshall, Steve Selvidge, Jeff Hulett, and J.D. Reager, all of whom will have their own yuletide-themed records for sale. Two birds with one stone!

Goner Presents: A Christmas Rock Show (Dec. 16 at B Side)

Speaking of great local record shops, Goner Records will be rocking the B Side stage with the festive musical stylings from Hartle Road , the Robby Grant Band, and The Sheiks with special guest Bennett. DJs Hot Tub Eric & Zac Ives–Goner’s two dynamic owners– are kicking things off at 7pm, with live music to follow.

Graham Winchester’s Honky Tonk Christmas  (Dec. 22 at Hernando’s Hide-A-Way)

Memphis music mainstay Graham Winchester will be hosting a night of honky tonk at the city’s best rockabilly roadhouse, Hernando’s Hide-A-Way, featuring holiday tunes from Tunstyles, Cheyenne Mars, and more. If you like your Christmas music with just a slight hint of sleaze, then this is the show for you.

Mempho Presents: A Southern Avenue Christmas (Dec. 22 at Minglewood Hall)

Memphis’ very own Southern Avenue will be returning home for an evening of holiday favorites in their signature throw-back soulful sound. The group, which seems to be on an almost endless touring schedule, seems to get better with each subsequent appearance.  I’d bet good money that the band will be at their best for this increasingly-rare hometown throwdown.

Although Halloween may be considered a children’s holiday by most, we all know that it’s a magical day that is even more enjoyable as an adult. Thankfully, Memphis has several great parties, concerts, and monster mashes headed our way soon. Here are just a few of the spooky music-centric events to circle on your calendar for the next couple of weeks…

All Hallows Grieve at Hi Tone
October 14

Sure, zombies, werewolves, and vampires are always good for a scare, but what’s more horrifying than facing one’s own feelings and emotions? Hi Tone’s recurring emo night is back with a special Halloween edition of the popular dance party, so dust off your skinny jeans, straighten those bangs, and head down for a night of fright and tears.

Ghoultown at Growlers
October 26

What would happen if you somehow had the ability to take a classic horror film and somehow transform it into a band? Texas band Ghoultown seems as close to an answer as we’re likely to get, expertly channeling films like From Dusk till Dawn and Curse of the Undead into an exhilarating live show. With a devilish mix of punk twang, horror rock, and spaghetti-western flair, Ghoultown is the perfect band for a hellacious good time.

Halloween Masquerade Ball at Black Lodge
October 28

Like a Spirit Halloween with liquor and live music, Black Lodge is truly your one-stop-shop for everything Halloween related. The video rental store/venue has always had a fondness for the macabre, but that seems to be ramped up even more this October with a slate of enticing events. Although we encourage you to check out their full list of events– especially the back-to-back Vampire and Witches Masquerade Ball on Friday, Oct. 20th followed the next evening by a Zombie Prom– the main event is the annual Masquerade Ball. Featuring a who’s who of Memphis rockers, this is likely to be the biggest party of the night.

Tone Presents “Black October”
October 28th

Tone, the city’s premiere Black Arts organization (or at the very least, its coolest) is back with another highly-anticipated Halloween event, this year at the Orange Mound Tower. This year’s theme is Vampires in Memphis, so dress accordingly and be ready to dance late into the evening. Oh, and based on last year, the costumes promise to be fierce, so bring your A-game!

Dia de los Muertos Celebration at Memphis Music Room
October 28

Dia de Muertos–the joyous Mexican holiday based on remembering and celebrating friends and family members who have died–has slowly integrated itself into American culture. In fact, there are a handful of Dia de Muertos events happening throughout Memphis this month, but the one we’re most excited for is the Don Ramon Band at the Memphis Music Room. Ramon is one of the city’s premiere Spanish-language acts and he is all but guaranteed to keep things rockin’ into the early morning.

Stevie Nicks at FedEx Forum

October 28

As Fleetwood Mac’s iconic singer Stevie Nicks has made clear many times over the years, she is not actually a witch or a practitioner of the dark arts, yet her mystical and fantastical personae continues to inspire would-be witches and warlocks worldwide. Aside from perhaps Ozzy Osbourne or Alice Cooper, it’s hard to think of a more appropriate classic rock icon to have in town during Halloween weekend. Nicks, of course, is a must-see event regardless of the season, but it’s hard to deny that a late October concert is particularly enticing.

For the past several years, Music Export Memphis has held an annual fundraiser event known as “The Tambourine Bash,” a showcase of some of the city’s finest musical talent. What sets the event apart from similar events is the unexpected collaborations between artists, many of whom had never worked together previously. This year’s event is slated for October 12 at the Overton Park Shell and tickets are available now. To learn more about the event, we sat down with Music Export Memphis’ Executive Director Elizabeth Cawein.

1. First things first, the Tambourine Bash is obviously a major annual fundraiser for Music Export Memphis. Tell us a little bit about the organization and your personal goals.

Music Export Memphis is a non-profit export office for Memphis music. We’ve been around since 2016, and we really grew exponentially during the pandemic because we ran an almost half-a-million dollar COVID relief fund for musicians and music professionals. This helped to massively increase our donor base and our revenue, but also the number of local artists who were aware of our work. Our primary focus is on subsidizing working artists through unique and innovative programs that all address elements of career promotion and building audiences outside of the city. So we’re funding tour grants, merchandise, and the like. We recently launched two new grants that help to fund publicity and marketing, both of which are incredibly key in building your career and helping to get your music out into the world. We believe that when we help artists extend their reach, it helps the whole city because it allows artists to remain in Memphis and build their careers here.

2. When did the Tambourine Bash begin and how has it changed over the years?

The Tambourine Bash started back in 2018 as a pretty straight-forward benefit event. One thing that eventually became  a thread linking the first event with the subsequent event was that the two bands we had performing were completely different. One was reggae and the other was Southern rock. That next year, we really embraced the idea of collaboration. That really came from recognizing that this was really the only event we were holding in Memphis every year, so we really wanted to push the creative ceiling and create something that was bigger than just a concert and silent auction. This idea of collaboration really grew in 2019, when we paired Talibah Safiya and Marcella Simmien together, along with Nick Black and Daz Rinko and Future-Everything and Unapologetic.

After having to cancel the 2020 event, we were concerned about getting people together in ’21 due to the ongoing pandemic, which is largely what led us to the Overton Park Shell as an ideal outdoor venue. As you know, the Shell is a massive venue, so it also allowed us to go even bigger than we had in the past. It was honestly a big leap for us, but with the help of our sponsors we were able to pull off a really successful show with a ton of artists. I knew that I wanted to end the night with a “super jam” finale, which was largely planned by Boo Mitchell, who is returning again this year for assistance.

While we now do more events during the year in Memphis, the Tambourine Bash is still our marquis night that continues to push the creative boundary of our artists. We also wanted to do something that you would never see again, and I can guarantee that the Tambourine Bash will give you some performances that will never be replicated.

3. Collaboration between seemingly disparate artists is at the core of what makes the event so unique. How do you go about pairing up different artists that may have not worked together before?

First of all, I’m already working on the 2024 event because I am constantly hearing from artists who want to participate or getting suggestions for artists. I also have particular concepts that I want to execute each year, so a perfect example of that is this year we have Dirty Streets collaborating with Alexis Grace and Deonna Sirod, who are both unbelievable vocalists. Dirty Streets rock so hard, and while I love their vocals, I knew I wanted some big powerhouse vocals with a gritty rock band. There are plenty of other examples like that as well, but I think finding artists who are in different genres but who share a similar spirit is at the core. There are also times when I’m a bit scared or apprehensive when I pair the artists together, but so far it’s always worked out! A perfect example of this was during last year’s event when Lucky 7 Brass Band, Aquarian Blood, and Rachel Maxann were paired up. It was completely ridiculous–there were like 17 musicians on stage at one time–but it was incredible. I mean, people still come up to me and want to talk about that set. I especially love when the artists tell me “there is no way we would have collaborated together otherwise, but now we’re working together on a new song or project.”

The other thing is, now that we’re going into the fourth year of the event, I think artists are much more understanding of the concept and therefore less hesitant to try out something that on its face may seem absurd. This year especially, I’ve found that artists are particularly enthusiastic because they’ve been wanting to participate.

4. Tell us a bit about this year’s line-up and what may be different from years past.

One thing that is different about this year’s Tambourine Bash is that we have a headliner, which we’ve never done before. In the past, we always had equal billing and set time for everyone, but in brainstorming ideas of how to get even more people in the audience, we decided to have a headliner. One thing that was really important to us was ensuring that the headliner was an artist that the city claims, which is certainly true of Cedric Burnside. There obviously needed to be that collaborative element as well, but Cedric’s partners have yet to be announced. I’m thinking we may keep it a surprise until that night, but that’s still to be determined.

Other than that, I would say the formula is pretty much the same, but because we never repeat artists, it will be a completely different show from years past and each of the sets will be totally unique.

5. I know that this is probably a tough question, but do you have any favorite performances from the past that you think exemplify what the Tambourine Bash is all about?

So I already spoke about one, especially when talking about what exemplifies the Tambourine Bash, and that would be last year’s set featuring Lucky 7 Brass Band, Aquarian Blood, and Rachel Maxann. To me, that is such a beautiful example of what we try to do. There are also some other favorite moments, like Jody Stephens, Steve Selvidge, and Amy LaVere doing a set together. While those three musicians had played together before, they had never done a trio performance like that. We also got to see Jody singing the Chris Bell classic “You and Your Sister,” and you could’ve heard a pin drop. It was such a beautiful and memorable moment, especially from a guy who always claims that he’s not a singer. There are always these great unexpected moments and I think each individual in attendance tends to leave with their own. Oh, and how could I forget the “super jam”! Having all of the artists come together is just magical and a reminder that you can’t get anything quite like this in any other city than Memphis. That level of talent coming together is just off the charts and always a great reminder of why we do this work.

6. Before I let you go, is there anything else that you wanted to add?

Beginning on September 18th, we’ll be rolling out our big annual giving push as a lead-up to the Tambourine Bash, which will include artist testimonials, a new video podcast called “Export 101,” along with a lot of other content. One thing that’s more Tambourine Bash related is the silent auction, which will be held online this year. That will also go live on the 18th. Finally, I think it’s important to stress that no other city has this type of organization or is doing the work that we’re doing. It’s incredibly unique to say the lease and when I travel for conferences or festivals and meet folks from other cities, they are flabbergasted at the work we’re doing. In fact, other cities have begun to reach out to us about assisting them with getting their own artist support programs set up. I just want Memphians to know that this doesn’t exist elsewhere and that when you come out to support us, you’re ensuring that we can continue to innovate and grow and keep Memphis as a world class music city.

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite summer activities that will keep you cool in many ways. Be sure to add these to your summer to-do list!

Grabbing a Cold Treat

There are plenty of spots around town to cool yourself off with an indulgent sweet treat. We recommend visiting one (or all) of these shops:

Mempops Red Popsicle

Enjoying the “Dog Days”

Why leave your pup at home when you could enjoy the day with them? These dog-friendly spots in the 901 are paw-fect for a dog day’s out:

Revamping Your Home

Enhance your space this summer with some cute knick-knacks, plants, or even candles to refresh the air. Try some of these local, small businesses in your search:

Staycation

Who says you have to leave Memphis to have a good time? Plan a night at one of these swanky spots for some R&R:

Focusing on Self-Care

Donna and Tom said it best, “Treat yourself!” Don’t let the summer pass you by without buying yourself a pampering session or some self-care must-haves:

Juneteenth is only days away, and TONE Memphis has put together a weekend full of festivities for Memphis natives (and visitors!) to partake in. TONE Memphis is a culture and arts non-profit organization that works to elevate the city’s culture. With their many efforts to highlight Memphis art, they are a powerful player within the city’s Black arts scene. “People always say you have to choose one artistry and that’s what I struggled with a lot as an artist. Choosing my artistry. For me, TONE makes me feel like I can do it all.” says creative The Goddessie. This time they are elevating the culture through their third annual Juneteenth Family Reunion Celebration! The celebration is set to begin on June 15th and close out on the 18th. Yes, that is four full days of activities, fun, and connecting with people that harbor just as much talent, beauty, and Memphis sauce as you mane!

Here is a quick guide about what to expect for the week’s festivities:

July 15th

The series of events will begin on Thursday at 7 PM  with a movie screening of the popular 1997 film, B.A.P.S. Attendees are to wear B.A.P.S-themed and 90’s attire and come with the same energy as the cast members of the movie.  At the midtown Malco Studios Theatre, TONE expects to see long nails, expressive clothing, and updos similar to BAPS’ stars, Nisi and Mickey. You can get your tickets here!

July 16th

Everyone knows that a family reunion is not a family reunion without a round or two of spades! As you may know, playing a game of spades is a favorite activity in the Black community, and it’s only right to celebrate the occasion by showing off your skills! Not only will Tone be hosting a broad selection of games, light food, drinks, and deejays at the party at their Orange Mound gallery, but there is a $200 prize involved as well! So be sure to show up and compete for the money AND the bragging rights! To play, sign up here!

July 17th

Saturday will be the city’s chance to be themselves and show up B.A.P.S and Bridgerton, Gala style! TONE Memphis released amazing visual marketing videos stating that they wanted to see Memphians in grillz and their best gala attire for a night of fashion, music, and plenty of drinks. The June 17 gala begins at 6:30 p.m., and the after-party starts at 9 p.m. and lasts until midnight. The gala and after-party tickets range from $50-$150.

July 18th

Last, but not least, what everybody is waiting for is the Juneteenth Music Festival! Music is our city’s most prized possession, and everyone knows that a city celebration isn’t a celebration for us unless it involves music. With that being said, the festival’s lineup will include some of the city’s best acts such as Memphis Legend, Project Pat, Duke Deuce, and Grammy-nominated producer Hitkidd. Other Memphis creatives on the lineup include Mafia 9, Idi X Teco, Talibah Safiya, The Goddessie, Ashley Ave, and more. This festival will also be a step toward new Memphis history as it will be held in the Orange Mound Tower. While many know that Orange Mound was the first black neighborhood built by black people, a few of Memphis’ greatest creatives came together to make one of its most important landmarks much more than what it once was. TONE’s Co-Founder, Victoria Jones, partnered with Unapologetic’s owner, IMAKEMADBEATS, to get The Orange Mound tower back up and running. The two have plans of making the grand area a space for Black entrepreneurs and creatives to do what they do best. This year’s Tone Juneteenth festival will be the city’s first introduction to the new space and has already drawn a number of natives’ attention.

With that being said, lots of history is being made in the midst of all the fun and you don’t want to miss out on the city’s biggest Juneteenth weekend.

We hope you got your tickets and we hope to see you there!
